WINES OF THE WORLD

South African Wines

Freedom has been very good to South Africa and especially to its wines. While the country has been producing wines since the 18th century, it wasn't until Apartheid was lifted that they got serious about wine. This is a bit of a tragedy, because South Africa has a Mediterranean-like climate, perfect for growing the traditional wine grapes.

Most of South Africa's wine growing regions are on the west coast, where the Atlantic Ocean touches, or inland. Many of South Africa's best wines, especially reds, come from Stellenbosch in the southwest of the country.

Although its Cabernet Sauvignos, Merlots and Pinot Noirs are world-class, South Africa has also developed a grape that suits its unique climate. Pinotage, a hybrid of Pinot Noir and Cinsault grapes is a red grape that works equally well in medium or full-bodied wines.

The most popular wine in South Africa, however, is Chenin Blanc, which it does better than anywhere outside of France.
